What is the REAL ID Act? In 2005, congress passed the REAL ID Act to enhance security measures for state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses. This act sets stricter federal standards for identification used for domestic air travel, entry into certain federal facilities, and nuclear power plants.
Sooo What Happens After the Deadline? Beginning May 7, 2025, standard driver’s licenses and IDs that do not meet REAL ID requirements will no longer be accepted by TSA for domestic flights. If you don’t have a REAL ID or an alternative form of federally accepted identification, you won’t be able to board your flight.
How Do I Know If I Have a REAL ID? Check your driver’s license or state ID! If it has a star in the upper right-hand corner, you’re good to go. If not, you’ll need to visit your state’s DMV to upgrade. Some states offer enhanced driver’s licenses (EDLs) that also meet the requirement, so be sure to confirm what’s available in your area.
What If I Don’t Have a REAL ID in Time? Don’t panic! You can still use other forms of identification to fly, including:
- A valid passport
- A U.S. military ID
- A DHS Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, Nexus, Sentri)
However, if you typically use your driver’s license to travel domestically and don’t want to carry your passport, it’s best to get your REAL ID sooner rather than later!
How Do I get my REAL ID? To obtain your REAL ID you will need to go to your local DMV. Make sure you bring the following documents below with you to the DMV. You will not be able to get your REAL ID
